And now for the notes and commentary. Gone from its traditional spot at the start of the schedule is the casino employees event, now moved down to the end on the off day between the four starting days for the Main Event and the official Day 2 when the survivors are merged. (Hint: It's an off day for the players, not for the temporary dealers working the WSOP.)

The mixed-games event scheduled to start on June 4th looks interesting, since it includes eight different games. Even for mixed-games fans, that one's gonna stretch the boundaries. If there's one thing, though, it epitomizes the diversity of this year's schedule, unlike so many regional events that offer no-limit and no-limit only, which is reminiscent of the classic line from The Blues Brothers: "We have both types of music here, country and western."

For those who do like their NLHE and nuttin' else, though, the 2008 WSOP includes 20 (I think I counted that right) NL events out of the 52 open tourneys that are offered. So expect at least that many chances for Phil Hellmuth Jr. to go after his record 12th WSOP bracelet. 25 or 30 is likely to be the most events that anyone is able to play, excepting if some big-name pro with a deep 'roll goes on a terrible run and donks out early day after day after day.

Also of note is that every open event except the limit hold'em shootout is scheduled for three days or more this time around. Last year, the WSOP had several two-day events on the slate, but was forced to add a third day to virtually every one due to the number of players that entered. Looks like they're not going to bother trying this time around.

And good news: In a press release that accompanied the release of the schedule, WSOP commissioner Jeffrey Pollack stated that Harrah's had heard the players "loud and clear," and that the 'Poker Pavilion' is no more. Good riddance, right? While the available space and the crush of players dictated that Harrah's and the Rio staff had to try something new, there was still something wrong about paying thousands of dollars for the privilege of playing poker in a glorified tent.

Many online poker sites are offering WSOP Satellites, with PokerStars.com leading the pack once again. The editor likes PlayersOnly.com for the juicyness of their tourneys.
