Wave Bye-Bye to Bill --- Frist Withdraws from '08 Presidential Race

Who says the news is never good? The wires are abuzz this morning with word that Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN), has abandoned his plans to run for President in 2008.

Yee-haw.

There is something really, really satisfying about seeing one of America's slimiest politicians getting his comeuppance, and whether one's personal beliefs skew right or left, the greater issue was that Frist himself was and always will be rotten eggs, in need of being tossed from the political scene.

Frist's aspirations took a huge hit when Rep. Leach (R-IA) suffered that stunning upset a few weeks back, as Leach was going to orchestrate a ground-level push to generate support for Frist's planned run. The upset loss for Leach was akin to knocking out one of the legs upon which Frist's running platform was to be built. (As an aside, I lived in Iowa for a few years some time back, and I will attest that the Iowa caucauses are the most undemocratic excuse for an elective process that this country now proffers; they need to go as well.)

But even besides the blow to Frist's power base, Frist's own continuing corruption sealed his fate. We've talked about some of the biggest issues in past posts, but one just has to admire Frist's consistency. In addition to all the other stuff, he's also recently been investigated for his role in several charitable organizatins, including one that paid consulting fees to Frist's close political cronies. Nor can he even count basic time: The Associated Press recently reported that he submitted false documnets claiming that he had undergone the 40 hours of annual medical training needed to keep his physician's certification current, though he had, of course, done no such thing.

Frist, for his part, issued the following brief statement:

"In the Bible, God tells us for everything there is a season, and for me, for now, this season of being an elected official has come to a close. I do not intend to run for president in 2008."

Sanctimonious bastard. It's not really polite to kick someone when he's down, but Bill Frist is that rare soul who really, really deserves it.
